Why We Sleep

The shortest path to a worse man is a shorter night.

Sleep is the foundation under strength, testosterone, judgment and mood. Short sleep is not toughness — it is self-sabotage.

What the book is

Walker's survey of sleep science: what the stages do, what happens to memory, hormones, immunity, mood and lifespan when you cut them. Some claims have drawn scrutiny in detail; the central case — that chronic short sleep is deeply damaging — is not in dispute.

The core discipline

Sleep is not a gap between productive hours. Deep sleep consolidates learning and clears the brain; REM handles emotional processing. Cut the night from eight hours to six and you lose a disproportionate share of both, along with a measurable slice of testosterone. Alcohol sedates, it does not restore.

How it lands on a modern man

Every other discipline in this app degrades on short sleep: temper, training, judgement, appetite control, patience with your children. It is the cheapest intervention available and the one men brag about skipping. Fix the schedule before you buy a supplement.

The marrow

  • Consistent wake time matters more than total hours in bed.
  • Alcohol sedates; it destroys REM.
  • Short sleep drops testosterone and raises hunger and irritability.
  • You cannot fully repay sleep debt on the weekend.
